Upper Saddle River, N.J. (October 5, 2016) – Manfrotto Distribution, Inc., distributor of Bowens products in the United States, proudly announces the launch of the new Generation X flash range by Bowens. These innovative units will debut in the U.S. at PhotoPlus Expo in New York City later this month and mark a renaissance for the legacy lighting manufacturer.

Generation X comprises two new flash systems: XMT – an all-in-one battery unit for location lighting and XMS – engineered to be the go-to system for photographers who need a function-rich and completely reliable flash in the studio.

Announcing the launch, David Hollingsworth, Marketing Manager, said, “Generation X is just the first step in re-launching Bowens to the imaging world. These barrier-breaking new products combine state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge design and are the result of many months of very intense market research and product development. They will be the vanguard of our plans for ongoing and regular new unit roll-outs in coming months and years.”

Added Hollingsworth, “We believe these are simply the best lights in their class available on the market today. New-look Bowens is creating beautifully designed and engineered products, tailored to our customers’ needs.”

John Gass, Technical Director said, “Generation X is the result of highly-focused analysis of our customers’ feedback through the years. These new units are revolutionary products which we believe are absolutely unbeatable in their class in terms of functionality, aesthetics and cost.”

He added, “For decades, customers have frequently described our products as ‘workhorses’ in the studio and on location. Now the workhorse has been transformed into a stallion; we tested the XMS at full power every five seconds over consecutive days and we couldn’t force this product to overheat.”

Priolite Ultra takes creative freedom a step beyond other monolights by allowing photographers to shoot at any shutter speed (up to 1/8000s) at any power output, all in the smallest all-metal construction monolight on the market. In order to freeze motion or balance ambient light in more moderately lit environments, photographers need to be able to drop the power of the strobe much more than just the two stops that most monolights allow for such high speed sync. With Priolite Ultra’s HotSync technology photographers can create the best possible exposure timing at any shutter speed, and most importantly, at any power setting (from 9Ws all the way up to 1000Ws)!
Priolite is a very affordable strobe option that does not compromise on quality or functionality. With compatibility for many major camera brands and a universal modifier mount, the Priolite Ultra can step right into any lighting kit. Some other features of the Priolite Ultra include:

  • 1/8000 high speed flash synch at any power level (from 9Ws up to 1000Ws)
  • Built-in 2.4 GHz wireless receiver compatible with Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax cameras (trigger and adjust up to 36 lights at the push of a button)
  • Universal modifier mount takes Priolite, Hensel, and Bowens-s mount without, and Elinchrom or Profoto with an adapter
  • Fine output control with 1/10th stop intervals
  • Recycling time of 2.5 sec at full power
  • LED modeling light (equivalent to 80 W halogen)
  • At only 8 inches in length and 5.6 inches wide, the lightweight Priolite Ultra is the extremely portability and ideal for travel
  • 220 full-power flashes per charge, and over 6000 at the lowest power setting
  • 5,500 Kelvin color temperature
  • Metal frame, metal hardware, metal mount, Li-Ion powered

Headquartered in Germany, Priolite has been engineering and manufacturing its photography lights since 2009. With the Priolite Ultra, the company is offering the Kickstarter community the first opportunity to jump on this next generation monolight. The campaign has structured backer packages starting at only $799, all of which can be found on the campaign page here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/priolite/priolite-ultra-1-8000th-flash-sync-compact-li-ion

The Sigma EF-630 flash is the latest external flash from Sigma and boasts an overhaul from previous models, including a new docking station that allows users to update the flash via personal computer. The ideal match with the new sd Quattro, the new Sigma EF-630 flash will be available in July for Sigma mount for the street price of $379 USD, along with its dedicated USB Docking station for $79 USD. Additional mount availability for systems including Nikon and Canon are to be announced at a later date.

“Our goal with the sd Quattro and 30mm 1.4 Art bundle is to make our new camera available to more photographers interested in the unique aspects of our Foveon Quattro sensor,” stated Mark Amir-Hamzeh, President of Sigma Corporation of America. “The cameras are truly exciting and showcase some great advancements including a new mirrorless design, updated auto-focusing system, a rugged build, and paired with our renowned 30mm 1.4 Art lens make for an extraordinary pair. Additionally, our new EF-630 flash system shows Sigma’s dedication to photography with updated performance from previous models, and makes for an ideal pairing with our new sd Quattro cameras.”

About the sd Quattro and 30mm 1.4 DC HSM Art

The sd Quattro utilizes our proprietary Foveon Quattro sensor renowned for its high-resolution capabilities. A magnesium alloy body makes the sd Quattro durable and rugged, while a dust and splash proof design make it ideal for photographers facing harsh conditions. On top of the new design, these cameras boast a list of useful advancements. These include a two-mode Autofocus detection that combines Phase detection for focus speed and Contrast detection for focus accuracy. The focus settings have also been enhanced with such modes as Movement Prediction, Face Detection, Free Movement, Focus Peaking and a variety of others. The new 2.3 megapixel viewfinder displays close to 100% of the field of view, and when placed in “Auto” will toggle between the viewfinder when the user has the camera to their eye and then to the LCD when the user lowers the camera. A new “Super-Fine Detail” mode brings out the full potential of the Quattro sensor by capturing seven different exposures with one shot and merging them for exceptional dynamic range (images can be extracted individually as well). The Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC HSM Art is a staple prime lens in Sigma’s lineup. This compact prime lens is designed for APS-C sensors and touts a bright 1.4 aperture. Part of the Sigma Global Vision lineup, every Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art is individually tested before leaving our single factory in Aizu, Japan and can be updated and fine-tuned with the Sigma USB dock and Sigma Photo Pro software.

About the Sigma EF-630 Flash

Compatible with most well-known digital SLR cameras, the EF-630 flash will be available in Sigma mount in July with additional mounts, including Canon and Nikon, in the future. The FP Flash function of the EF-630 makes flash photography possible at shutter speeds greater than the normal sync speed, which is typically limited at shutter speeds up to 1/250 second for most cameras. The FP Flash function for high shutter speeds is necessary when setting a larger aperture to limit depth of field when shooting in daylight, as high shutter speeds are used to balance the daylight and the flashlight at any shutter speed.

EF-630 features:

  • Intuitive user interface: dot matrix LCD screen for improved menu visibility, D-Pad and dial settings controls, and easy one-click disengage function improve ease of use
  • Slave flash function: for use with multiple flash systems
  • Modeling flash function: check for intense reflections and shadows before capturing the shot
  • AF assist light: accurate auto-focus in low light conditions
  • Auto Power-off: flashgun automatically powers off after a period of non-operation to conserve battery life
  • Manual flash power level control: manually set the flash power level from 1/1 to 1/128

The new EF-630 Flash can be updated with the latest software from a workstation or laptop using the Sigma Optimization Pro software and Flash USB Dock FD-11 (sold separately).

As photographers begin to expand their horizons artistically, they will come to a point that studio lighting becomes a part of their workflow. (OK, birders, sport/street shooters, and photojournalists can go read something else) Studio light kits are a great way to start, but unless you drop some rather large coin for them, corners will have been cut by the lighting maker. This usually is applied to the light stands that are included in the kit. I have owned several kits and I have always found that the included stands are a little bit on the wobbly side. So you run out and buy some beefier lightstands and you discover that their stability (dutifully obeying the laws of physics) is derived from the wide stance of their tripod. That’s great because now your lights are steady.

Until you have to move them.

Some lightstands come with wheels but that doesn’t make them any easier to move about. Outside of that, not much has been done to improve that situation. Until now.

Adorama has introduced an automatic lightstand. Automatic? Like in self-deploying? No, not self-deploying, but the next best thing. You have to manually set up this lightstand just like every other one, but once you have done that, that’s when the magic happens. The Flashpoint Auto Lightstand can automatically retract its legs when picked up and deploy its legs when put back down.

This transforms the stand from what is, in effect, an upside-down open umbrella into a simple pole and back again. You can now move your lightstands without having to worry about tripping over the silly things.

The Auto Lightstand comes in two heights (7′ and 9′ – 9′ model shown above) and cost $49.95 and $79.95 respectively. The stand also includes a handy carrying case.
