Leica Store Opening in Miami, FL

Leica will be opening it’s newest store in Miami, FL (technically it’s in Coral Gables, FL) at 372 Miracle Mile. The festivities begin on February 22, 2013 at 6 PM. The following Saturday Leica Store Miami will be hosting a Leica S System Demo Day starting at 10 AM. I, for one, am very pleased to see this happen as it will save me a lot of travel time (the next nearest Leica Store is in West Palm Beach). I will have another update when I visit the store.

Match Technical Developing Thumbs Up for Fuji X-E1

I have just been informed by Tim Isaac, of MatchTechnical Services, that they are busy developing a version of the Thumbs Up for the Fuji X-E1. They expect to start taking orders and begin shipping next month.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Thumbs Up, a brief explanation:

Shortly after Leica introduced it’s now legendary M8 digital rangefinder, Mr. Tim Isaac, engineer and photographer, decided that something was missing from the Bauhaus design of the Leica M8: a place to put your thumb. Working with Ms. Hong Chen and the members of Rangefinder Forum and the Leica Users Group, he developed a little CNC machined brass gadget that slips into the camera’s hot-shoe and adds a place where one can comfortably and naturally place their thumb, greatly enhancing the ergonomics of the camera.

That was six years ago. Tim and company have expanded their product lines to include not only the Leica M & X digital cameras, but the Fuji X-Series as well (the photo above shows the latest addition to the Thumbs Up family – the EP-7S for the Fuji X-Pro1), plus a range of other accessories.

I am already on Tim’s list for the Thumbs Up for the X-E1.

Fotodiox Introduces WonderPana Filter System for Super Wide Angle and Ultra Wide Angle Lenses

Fotodiox recently introduced a professional filter system for super wide-angle and ultra wide-angle lens systems called WonderPana. Super wide and ultra wide lenses are always problematic regarding filters and other accessories that would normally be mounted on the front of the lens due to protruding front lens elements. With the WonderPana Filter System, SWA & UWA lenses now have access to UV, polarizing, and ND Grad Filters.

There are two models of the WonderPana Filter System: the WonderPana 145 ($200) and the WonderPana 66 ($350). The WonderPana 145 mounts 145mm (!!) circular filters and can be upgraded to the WonderPana 66 which adds 6″ x 6″ flat plate filters. I imagine that 6×6 flat plate filters from other systems could be used as well.

Fine Leather Half-Cases for the Sony NEX-7

Korean craftsmen over at Gariz.com are preparing to release a fine leather half-case for the Sony NEX-7. The Gariz case, unlike any of the others on the market features a rigid metal baseplate with access to the NEX-7′s battery/memory card door. The case also features Gariz’ gun holster ring, a swivel ring on the bottom plate to accommodate his sling straps.

Pricing has not been set, but the case is expected to start shipping at the end of February.

The PhotoPlus Expo 2011 was held once again at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. With the absorption of PMA into the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), PPE has become the last major standalone photography exposition in the U.S. I once again took up my annual pilgrimage to the Big Apple to see what the camera makers had to offer.

Arca-Swiss presents the ‘Nex Kit’ for Nex 3 and Nex 5 Sony cameras.The kit consists of an L-bracket and a viewfinder shoe for an optical finder.

Previously Arca-Swiss has released the Mini L-bracket for compact cameras such as the Olympus E-PL1, E-PL2, Panasonic Lumix GF and LX3, Samsung NX-100, & Canon G10; the new smallest DSLR offerings from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sony.

Today we present a new mini L-bracket. Light and small, it is specifically designed to mate specifically with the Nex 3 and Nex 5 cameras from Sony.

The Nex L-bracket is fully adaptable with our monoball®Fix and monoball®Classic quick release systems. It takes into account the compact design of the Sony Nex cameras allowing a fast change from landscape to portrait format and vice-versa. Secure handling of the cameras when hand holding is improved due to the L-bracket as well.

The design further allows free access to cable ports allowing unhindered connection to the computer without having to remove or shift the bracket.

The kit includes a shoe allowing easy attachment of an optical finder. An optical finder isa great accessory allowing the photographer to see better, yielding faster, more accuratecomposing and shooting in low light conditions.
