The PhotoPlus Expo 2011 was held once again at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. With the absorption of PMA into the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), PPE has become the last major standalone photography exposition in the U.S. I once again took up my annual pilgrimage to the Big Apple to see what the camera makers had to offer. The Big Three were present with major displays as always, but the show was populated with about a hundred other vendors showing off their new toys. Here are some highlights: Canon Canon’s booth was populated with every existing copy of the newly announced EOS-1DX professional DSLR. I had an opportunity to handle the camera, but as it was a pre-release unit, I was not permitted to use my own memory cards to take sample pictures. The camera felt good in the hand and all of the controls fell naturally into place. The two joystick arrangement works in either the portrait or landscape orientations. Canon’s claim to shot speed, tracking focus, and lowlight capabilities seem to be well founded but I cannot render final judgement until I get to personally test the camera fully. That is going to be [...]

Arca-Swiss presents the ‘Nex Kit’ for Nex 3 and Nex 5 Sony cameras. The kit consists of an L-bracket and a viewfinder shoe for an optical finder. Today we present a new mini L-bracket. Light and small, it is specifically designed to mate specifically with the Nex 3 and Nex 5 cameras from Sony. The Nex L-bracket is fully adaptable with our monoball®Fix and monoball®Classic quick release systems. It takes into account the compact design of the Sony Nex cameras allowing a fast change from landscape to portrait format and vice-versa. Secure handling of the cameras when hand holding is improved due to the L-bracket as well. The design further allows free access to cable ports allowing unhindered connection to the computer without having to remove or shift the bracket. The kit includes a shoe allowing easy attachment of an optical finder. An optical finder isa great accessory allowing the photographer to see better, yielding faster, more accuratecomposing and shooting in low light [...]

The new Vario ND filter is now available in screw-in sizes from 52 to 82mm. The new Heliopan Vario ND filters are available from camera stores in the USA.
Fans were lining up outside The Falls Apple Store in Miami, FL today since 6 AM in order to be the “first on the block” to own the latest version of Apple’s wildly successful iPad, the iPad 2. I passed by the store around 3:30 PM to see how the line was doing. What greeted me was similar to the huge lines I saw when Apple launched OS X Leopard, wrapping around the open-air mall for hundreds of feet. These gregarious fellows had been there since 6 AM in the morning! From right to left, Matt, Jonathan, Andre and Max, were all raring and eager for the store to open so they could have the honor of being first. Similar events were happening at pretty much every Apple Store in the universe. I got a report from Texas that Apple fans had camped out for days in front of a store. A friend of mine got there around the same time I did, and he was able to get his iPad2 (black, 64GB Verizon model) at around 6:45 PM. He called me a reported that over 100 people were still in line. The store ran out of 64GB AT&T models [...]

To get to the point ARCA-SWISS d4 & d4m With the invention of the d4 pan tilt head ARCA-SWISS has put an end to setting levers of 3d heads that extend in all directions and always get in the way. No more uneven swivelling out of the camera. No more oversized dimensions, heavy loads and other all too well-known drawbacks to get in your way. We get straight to the point! The d4 and d4m are especially suitable for efficient and precise work in digital studio photography and outdoors for architectural photography. The d4 is the world’s smallest, most functional and lightest gearhead. Technical specifications The innovative design of the ARCA-SWISS d4 and d4m gearheads unites the pivot points of the X and Y movements at the same point. The result of this new concept: identical and the smallest possible rotational radii. That ensures small camera movements and, as a consequence, almost no deviations in scale, which, until now, led to reduced depth of field in digital photography and all too often made tedious corrections necessary. The self-locking, micrometric movements in X and Y result from separate gear mechanisms, manufactured with a high-strength special alloy. Every tilt movement [...]

When one sets out to create a digital darkroom for themselves, either professionally or otherwise, great care and research almost always goes into selecting the best monitor, the best colorimeter, the best computer, the best mouse, heck, even the desk and chair gets some attention. Workflow articles always focus on the input from one’s camera into the computer and then out to the printer, but this misses the point. There is another vitally important part of the workflow whose input needs should the be considered: the photographer. Human Interface Devices (HID) is the fancy term for gizmos that allow you, the user, to interact directly with the computer. Since we all don’t have access to Johnny Mnemonic’s wetware interface, Tony Stark’s awesome 3D displays or Flynn’s molecular digitization system we have to do it the old-fashined way: with a keyboard and a pointing device.
Another PDN PhotoPlus show has come and gone and, once again, I slogged my way through the amassed crowd of photographers, photo buyers and journalists to bring you highlights from the show. This year’s report will be separated into two sections: Cameras & Lenses/Accessories. But first, as always, an Animoto video of the show highlights. Cameras PENTAX – First on my list of booths to visit was Pentax. There I met Ned Bunnell, President of Pentax Imaging USA, and we discussed at length (such as can be had at a trade show) the new to USA/Europe Pentax 645D medium format digital camera. The 645D is modeled very closely on the venerable Pentax 645N film camera and is compatible with all of the 645N’s lenses. This was a very smart move on Pentax’s part. As a whole new line of digital lenses are being developed for the 645D (only the 55 mm f/2.8 prime is available at launch) photographers can tap into a vast array of compatible lenses right away, many of which are available at reasonable prices (for now) on the used market. When the 645D launched in Japan, it was a runaway success. I think this took Pentax [...]

Really Right Stuff, purveyors of fine camera accessories, have recently added a new product for the Leica M digital rangefinders. The BM9 is a version of their famous L-plates that allows cameras to be mounted on a tripod (using any Arca Swiss style clamp) in either the horizontal (landscape) or vertical (portrait) orientation without having to tilt the tripod head over 90o, forcing the photographer to have to completely recompose the shot and altering the center of gravity of the tripod. The BM9 is actually much more than an L-plate. It is a system that allows for custom combinations to suit the needs of any photographer. Consisting of a Base Plate, an L-bracket, and a Grip, the BM9-B stylishly adds multiple mounting options to Leica digital M cameras while shoring up handhold-ability for folks with large mitts (like yours truly). [DISCLAIMER] The BM9-B Set was provided to me by Really Right Stuff for me to review. [/DISCLAIMER] Appearance The BM9-B is only available in an anodized black finish. This might irk owners of chrome Leica M8′s or steel paint M9′s, but to be honest, the finish is so rugged and durable, it’s worth the minor color mismatch. Heck, just [...]

The microEVF is the first electronic viewfinder designed from the ground up specifically for HDSLR cameras. The microEVF is not just a bulky repurposed LCD monitor: It is designed specifically for the needs of HDSLR emphasizing compact lightweight design, superior power consumption, and incredible affordability. The popularity of HDSLRs such as the Canon 5D MKII for video and motion photography has skyrocketed in recent years, but the camera body is not ideal for video. The first generation of solutions for monitoring currently available attaching an optical viewfinder to the back of the camera’s LCD screen severely limit placement of the viewfinder and camera body and eliminate possibility of using additional monitors for camera assistants or directors. The new Redrock microEVF is an external electronic viewfinder that connects to the camera body and can be placed anywhere for maximum comfort and stability, and can be part of a multi-monitoring solution. The microEVF uses a custom made state-of-the-art backlit LED fitted in an attractive, ergonomic housing. The microEVF can also be used on any video camera that provides an HDMI output signal. microEVF Features Compact, lightweight electronic viewfinder High resolution full color HD display – greater resolution than the rear LCD on [...]

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 07.09.2010. - Carl Zeiss now offers photographers special accessories to support their work with ZEISS lenses. The new UV and POL filters from Carl Zeiss are optically and mechanically tailored to the high-quality ZEISS SLR lenses and protected against light reflections with the ZEISS T* multi-coating. Because good optics can be somewhat heavy at times, Carl Zeiss now offers a special camera strap with air cell padding for SLR cameras. “It is important for us to not only deliver ideal image results, but to also make photography something to remember. This does not stop at lenses. We have also taken the demands and needs of photographers into consideration during development of our accessory products. They are the ideal addition to our ZEISS SLR lenses,” explains Martin Klottig, Marketing Manager of the Camera Lens Division at Carl Zeiss AG. The new UV and POL filters meet the highest demands on mechanical quality and can be quickly and easily changed. High-quality optical glass is tailored to the performance of ZEISS lenses, while the T* multi-coating minimizes light reflections on the glass-air surfaces and improves transmission. In addition to the filter function, the front lens element of the lens provides protection against [...]

Really Right Stuff, makers of some the best camera accessories on the planet, have just announced that the BS2-L plate is in stock and available for purchase. For those of you who do not know what an L-plate is, an L-plate is mounted on the tripod socket on your camera body. The plate allows you to mount you camera vertically (portrait mode) without having to tip the tripod head over 90 degrees keeping the camera’s weight and balance centered over the tripod. Really Right Stuff makes L-plates for most major brands of cameras including medium format digitals. The also recently began shipping a combo L-plate grip for the Leica M8-M9 which I shall be reviewing very shortly. Be sure to also check out their line of ballheads and clamps for your favorite tripod. An RRS/Arca Swiss style clamp is needed to use their L-plate system.

Leica is world renowned for the quality of their lenses. Unmatched optical design coupled with exotic glass, produces lenses that are head and shoulders above anything else in the 35 mm market today. Leica’s M-system rangefinders are no exception. However, due to the mechanical nature of the M-rangefinder, zoom lenses are not possible. This did not deter Leica’s engineers from creating multi-focal length lenses for this platform. The first such lens, the Tri-Elmar, was introduced in 1998 and sported three distinct focal lengths in one lens: 28, 35, and 50 mm, all at f/4. The lens was a mechanical marvel. In September 2006, Leica announced the Wide Angle Tri-Elmar (also known as the WATE) which covered focal lengths of 16, 18 & 21 mm. It was intended for the Leica M8, the first digital M camera which sported a 1.33x cropped sensor, making the effective focal lengths of the lens approximately 21, 24, and 28 mm. I recently took a trip to London and Paris and Leica USA was kind enough to loan me this $6000 lens and its attendant Universal Finder. I also packed my Nikon D700 kit as well and will now report on my experiences with carrying [...]
