No, I was given the opportunity to shoot raptors – birds of prey. Granted its a small series (only six shots) but I hopefully captured the beauty of these creatures.
Tis the season for group holiday luncheons. Coworkers everywhere the holidays are observed gather at restaurants and homes to celebrate another year of working together and getting the job done. Such is the case at my day job. On Friday, December 3, 2010, we did just that. After a couple of weeks of planning and voting on a place to eat, we selected an Argentinian steakhouse at a local shopping mall. Being the photographer in our group, I brought my gear along to take our annual group photo. Coincidentally, another group from our office was there celebrating as well. So when it came time to take a group shot, we had quite a few more people than originally planned. We gathered outside the restaurant (which was located on the outer edge of the mall) and began to organize ourselves for the shot. That’s when the Mall Cops showed up. Apparently, it is illegal to take a photograph of a group of happy, well-dressed, well-fed people in front of a white wall. I explained to them that this group of coworkers just finished their Christmas luncheon in the restaurant and, as we have done for the last 16 years, were planning [...]

With the release of the Pentax 645D in March 2010, the blogosphere has been abuzz with speculation as to how well the new, (relatively) low-cost entry into medium format digital would fare against the established leaders in the field. To this end, I browsed the DXO website and came upon data for the 645D. I was tipped off to this information via Nikon Rumors, who did a comparison of the 645D and the Nikon D3x. So with a little deft browsing, I whipped up a quick comparo of the 645D vs Hassy H3DII-39 vs Phase One P40+. Here is the overview page. There will be an analysis after the jump. [DISCLAIMER - This article is an opinion piece based on my personal experience and data provided independently by DXO. I have had no interaction with DXO other than using the free services provided by their website.] Preamble Before you ask, I could not use the H4D-40 in this comparo because DXO has not provided the information on their website yet. When that information is provided, I will update this article and/or publish a follow-up. Analysis OVERALL SCORE – 645D: 82, H3DII-39: 75, P40+: 87The 645D ends up very [...]

With Olympus finally letting the micro four-thirds cat out of the bag, has the Next Digital Age finally dawned? You’re probably thinking “What has Carlos been smoking and can he send me a couple of pounds?” All I ask is that you hear me out for a second. Let’s take a critical look at the technological developments in digital camera design in the last few years. Camera Size In the professional space, camera size has not changed much with digital. In some cases the cameras have gotten larger! Granted, today’s pro digital bodies are smaller than their progenitors but the difference isn’t that much. The main culprit: batteries. The accessory to the crime: the high performance components that comprise the guts of most any pro camera. Very power hungry thus requiring huge batteries to provide a reasonable run time for pro photographers. Nikon recently bucked this trend with the introduction of the D700. A more compact pro/semi-pro camera with the guts of its pro level sibling (the D3) crammed inside. Smaller body, lighter weight, same image performance characteristics. However, the true villain in this epic tale are the stable of lenses owned by most pro photographers. Pro photographers own/use lots [...]

OK, I’ve posted about my “Cool Rides” gallery on flickr before. Snazzy cars, bikes and other methods of transportation the strike my fancy (as my British friends would say) are the usual subjects. However, today I came across a press release of something so off-the-wall I had to add it. The World’s Coolest Looking Riding Mower: Behold the Husqvarna Panthera Leo, a concept riding mower with zero greenhouse gas emissions and built out of recyclable materials. This beauty is electric powered (there are five motors), can turn 360 degrees in place (no turn radius), and the tri-blade cutting deck flexes to match undulations in the lawn. The cutting deck can change its width, making itself narrower or wider as needed. Sensors in the cutting deck alert you to any tree roots lurking about and since it’s electric, it’s very, very quiet. It looks to me like the chimeric offspring of a John Deere Mower, a Delorean Sports Car, and a Norelco razor. But wait! There’s a video:

Infrared palms Originally uploaded by etrigan63 When Leica designed the M8 they elected to install an extremely thin anti-aliasing (AA) filter over the sensor to increase the overall sharpness of the images captured by the camera. However, this had the side-effect of making the M8 sensitive to IR reflections. This manifested itself in certain dark fabrics (mostly synthetics) acquiring a magenta cast. Leica’s fix was to issue IR/UV cut filters to be mounted over the lenses. The Leica community, however, realized that this “weakness” could be turned into an advantage. By using a B+W 092 Near Infrared filter the M8 is capable of capturing surreal images by blocking almost all of the visible light and recording the near-infrared portion of the spectrum. This was the first attempt (that I liked) using the M8 + 092 IR filter. Image was shot RAW and converted using Lightroom and a false color IR preset I got from KillerLightroomTips.

Firmware 1.201 Test – Multiple Light sources Originally uploaded by etrigan63 I went to a local mall today and looked for a shot that included multple light sources. I managed to find a fine example that combines daylight, fluorescent light and incandescent (halogen) light. The image is unadjusted other than a conversion from DNG to jpeg in Lightroom 1.3.1. The AWB setting has managed to do a good job with this combo, maintaining the colors very well. Click on the image to see a larger version on Flickr.

Buddha in New York Originally uploaded by etrigan63 A recent trip to New York City uncovered a large Buddha hidden inside of the trendy Asian restaurant Tao. The Buddha stands (sits) over 20 ft tall and has an ever-changing light show playing over it. In it’s base is a koi pond and the koi are not coy. If they spot you, they will poke their heads out of the water looking for a handout. Think of them as gold and white homeless people. The restaurant keeps the pan-Asian theme all the way down to the restrooms. On the walk downstairs you are met with images of the Dali Lama at various stages of his life. The restrooms are marked “Yin” and “Yang” (“women” and “men” respectively). Personally, if I hadn’t seen guys coming out of the Yang Room, I would have probably entered the wrong room. Camera: Leica M8 Lens: CV 40mm Nokton Classic f/1.4 Shot RAW (DNG) and converted to B&W using Photoshop CS3 and Alienskin Exposure2. ***31 DAYS OF THE DRAGON CLUE *** The Eastern Deity in the photo is your clue.
