Sony Japan posted the following press release on their site (the following is google translated): For assistance to the victims of the flood affected areas in Thailand The people the victims of flooding due to heavy rain in Thailand, We sincerely sympathy. 　The Sony Group in order to help rescue and rehabilitation of areas affected by flood victims, will donate 30 million yen as a donation. In addition, employees from soliciting donations Sony disaster, and also conducted a matching gift company will contribute the same amount from it. 　This is a disaster area, Sony’s manufacturing facilities are located, is an important area for Sony. At Sony, we would love to celebrate the reconstruction of affected areas as soon as possible. While the statement reports that Sony is donating money to the afflicted areas (¥30M ~ $389K USD), it also states that their factories are located in the disaster area and that it is important to them. To me, this means that if production is delayed, they can blame the floods. While the timing of this flood is unfortunate for consumers, it is more unfortunate for those Thais living in the area who have been flooded out. Please give generously to [...]

Those of us who hope to soon get our hands on the Sony NEX-7 will have to cool our jets a little more as Sony has pushed back the release date for the highly anticipated camera/lens combo. I just got an e-mail from my dealer who spoke to his Sony rep that the NEX-7 will be delivered in November and the Carl Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 lens will not hit the shelves until December. This is at least here in the USA. I must patiently meditate until it arrives. Ohhhhmmmmmmm. Ohhhmmmmmm.

Photorumors has gotten ahold of the specs for the upcoming Sony α77 cropped sensor pro camera. The camera is expected to be announced on August 24, 2011. While the specs hold great promise, many pros I have corresponded with are on the fence about this camera due to Sony’s use of an Electronic View Finder (EVF) instead of a traditional optical one. Though not listed below, the OLED EVF is supposed to sport around 3 million pixels which would make it the highest resolution EVF on the market to date. Full specs and analysis after the jump.
Reader Dr. Josesph forwarded me a copy of a letter sent to him by Leica concerning the R-System and a possible solution that might be announced shortly. A m4/3 based system with an adapter would make all of those R lenses floating about quite viable again and would not limit the camera to a niche market. 30. August 2010/ Ulrich Deiß / Infoservice / Telefon 06442 208 – 111 / Telefax – 455 / info@leica-camera.com Dear Mr. Dr. Joseph, Thank you very much for your e-mail regarding the LEICA R System. I can understand your disappointment that there will be no “R10″. Please let me explain the reason for this: At photokina 2008 Leica Camera AG announced that a digital reflex camera “LEICA R10″ would compliment the R-System. At this time the technical and economical assessments for the project were in progress. The findings have shown that under the present technical capabilities of Leica and the current competitive situation the market potential for a digital reflex camera with R-Bayonet would be limited to current R customers. Chance for getting new customers using competitor´s products would be quite low. The installed customer base using R-equipment would not have been sufficient [...]

LeicaRumors has received a tip that Leica is planning to introduce an EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) camera at Photokina 2010. “We will see a full frame Leica EVIL on Photokina 2010. It will look like the Leicaflex 18X24 prototype. Of course without mirror or the film lever and so on. It will be a VERY small system camera, but there will be a big battery grip you can use, if you want. The AF is very special, moving chip, the phase AF is ON the main sensor. Only in black, 21 mp, 2fps, native ISO from 50 to 6400. Full magnesium. Price: body only 3200 EUR. Will start with 3(!) pancakes, 2 primes, 2 zooms.” Image Source [Speculcations] This bodes for a very radical change in lens design. Moving the AF into the body is not new (Contax did that with their N-system), but Leica’s strength has always been lens design. Dedicated lenses for this platform would be much simpler in design and construction as they will lack a focusing mechanism. Manual focus will have to be controlled from the body since having a lens barrel focusing mechanism would throw off the AF. The rumored quantity of lenses will make a very strong showing for the [...]

Freshly minted rumor site ZeissRumors has some information pertaining to the long awaited (desired) digital version of the Zeiss Ikon rangefinder system. When Leica launched it’s M8 digital rangefinder in 2006, many users (myself included) wondered if Zeiss would be far behind in producing a digital version of its M-mount based rangefinder. The folks at Oberkochen stated that they would not produce a digital rangefinder until certain technical obstacles were overcome. According to this blog post, Zeiss has partnered with Sony and is planning on using the new Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor that Sony announced back in June of 2008. This means that the Digital Ikon (Daikon? Ikon-D?) will have a full-frame, 18 Mpx CMOS sensor with 2x the ISO sensitivity of current CMOS designs. (The full frame & 18 Mpx value are both wild-assed speculation on my part based on some rumored specs of Sony Alphas due out this fall. I cannot see Sony custom-designing/building an Exmor R CMOS sensor just for Zeiss, but hey, they said that digital M cameras were impossible too…) With the full-frame Leica M9 due to be announced in less than a month, I, along with a whole bunch of other rangefinder users, [...]

The Olympus E-P1, their long-awaited entry into the Micro Four-Thirds arena announced last year, is going to be formally announced tomorrow. Many images have surfaced including a tiny version of this: I should have full press releases on the 16th and hopefully a review sample some time thereafter. I just hope they offer it in black…

Olympus' highly anticipated entry into the micro four-thirds arena, the direct descendant of the classic Olympus PEN, is scheduled to be revealed on June 16, 2009. ... Here is the image in question: Based on this top-down view, we can assume the following: No built-in flash (popup or otherwise) No optical/electronic viewfinder (possible shoe-mounted accessory as was previously speculated) In-camera image stabilization/dust removal (SSWF = Supersonic Wave Filter) Full/semi-auto + manual operation and movie mode (HD?)

LCD display ▪ Pop-up flash ▪ Flash sync (1/500) ▪ Camera level ▪ 23 AF sensors ▪ Quick Live View ▪ Video Full HD ▪ Dust/splashes sealed ▪ Aluminum-magnesium alloy body ▪ Released early September, 2009 Similarly, the rumor mills are now abuzz with a tidbit that states that Nikon will not repeat the successful formula of stuffing their top-end pro sensor into a more compact semi-pro body (Nikon D3 --> Nikon D700) and instead will introduce another pro level body (even money says it will be the D3H). Now seeing as the Nikon D3X and Sony Alpha 900 share the same base sensor (the surrounding electronics and image processing engines are vastly different), it is not too large a stretch of the imagination that the D3H and any semi-pro offspring will sport a similar sensor.

Photorumors.com (great site, I highly recommend it) posted a shot from a movie posted on the Olympus website ostensibly celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Olympus PEN camera. However, since previous statements by Olympus bigwigs indicate that their long-awaited μ4/3 camera will honor the PEN design (and the prototype which I have seen with my own eyes is very PEN-ish) could this be a teaser for said camera?

In discussions with other photographers (especially those who can read/translate japanese) the announcement states that: the Olympus micro-4/3rds camera(s) have been designed to carry on the philosophy of the "silver-halide" era PEN half-frame cameras; about a third of compact camera users are considering moving up to a DSLR but don't because those cameras are too big, heavy, expensive, and complex -- these users are seen as the target for the micro-4/3rds models; this is the strategy by which Olympus can "revive their imaging business". [translation provided here ] So Olympus, like Panasonic, is targeting the "soccer mom" looking to move up from P&S cameras to something more sophisticated but still maintain ease of use and small size. ... The design is such a hit that Panasonic & Leica are rumored to be hard at work designing a μ4/3 system similar to it which will likely be sold as the Lumix LX-5/D-Lux 5 respectively.

When Nikon introduced it’s flagship D3 many (including myself) wondered when the other shoe was going to drop. Historically, Nikon would introduce a pro body at a resolution that was comparable to other devices in the class and later bring out an “X” model that ups the ante without having to introduce a whole new model level (most notably the D1 -> D1x, then the D2 -> D2x). In this case the “H” variant has been merged into the base model with the introduction of a DX-crop mode that raises the shooting rate at the expense of image size. So with the introduction of the D3 last year (August 23, 2007 to be exact) everyone started the countdown to the inevitable release of a “X” model and the photoblogosphere (my term) was rampant with speculation as to the specs of expected model. Rumor sites, like Nikonrumors.com, were expecting announcements on Dec 1, 2008 and had been seeing hints here and there popping up on closely monitored Nikon websites around the world. Oddly enough, confirmation arrived in Nikon’s own Nikon Pro magazine which included a multi-page article covering the features of the up-till-now rumored camera. From Nikon Pro Magazine (courtesy of [...]

Rumors have been flying about the blogosphere regarding an earthshaking product introduction by Nikon. Nikon took out a half-page ad in Rangefinder Magazine about “Something Big” to be announced at the WPPI convention in February 2009.NikonRumors has been tracking this for quite a while and even Wired picked up on this. So far the rumors have Nikon introducing a new format sensor called MX. The MX sensor is 48 mm x 48 mm and has 40.7 megapixels. These pixels are the same size and pitch as the ones in the D3/D700 so the camera should have spectacular low-light capabilities. The sensor can be masked for portrait or landscaped images without having to rotate the camera. The camera will be able to mount DX and FX lenses with and adapter. Here are some observations and deductions I have made: 1. Nikon wants in on the lucrative MF/Wedding market and will lowball the competition severely. Phase One is currently offering a P45+ back for $29,990 and they are throwing in the rest of the camera kit (Body, Viewfinder, & 80mm Lens – an $11,000 value) for free. Rumors place the price of the MX in the sub $10k range. 2. The RF [...]
