The Sony NEX-7 has been benchmarked on DXOMark.com. As expected, the NEX-7, with its mirrorless design, sligthly bested its larger sibling, the SLT Alpha 77. It even outscored the vernable A900 full-frame camera in all categories except low-light ISO. One thing to take into consideration is that the A77/A65 just had a firmware update released today. DXOMark will have to rebenchmark the A77 with the new firmware to see if the scores change. The firmware on the NEX-7 will probably also be tweaked in the near future. Retesting will have to occur when that happens as well.

11/07/2011 Hasselblad announces a firmware update that fine-tunes the H4D-60 to a whole new level with additional features and functionality. With a major firmware update announced today, the Hasselblad H4D-60 is well on its way to becoming a legend. One-click focus check, bi-directional electronic spirit level, the ability to display camera grip information on the rear monitor, an improved high resolution LCD, Live Video for more efficient workflow and Schneider and Rollei support bring the H4D-60 to a whole new level of usability for the working photographer. Here’s a closer look at a few of the new features. One-click focus check: With a single click, users can zoom in to 100% to check focus position and accuracy, a feature that’s particularly helpful when shooting untethered. With the H4D-60′s updated ability to utilize every pixel of resolution in its 3-inch monitor, one-click focus check’s accuracy is further enhanced. Spirit Level: The new bi-directional (pitch and roll) digital spirit level puts an end to skewed horizons and off-angle straight edges. A single button press of the “i” button – or a customized user button – calls up the level on the viewfinder and the LCD for quick access to precise visual references.
The Phase One IQ Road Show made a stop here in Miami, FL and I was able to attend, sampling the latest in high-end camera goodness from Phase One: the IQ180 digital back. Big thanks to Phase One and Capture Integration for having the roadshow stop here and inviting me. The event was held on the 9th floor balcony of the Museum Tower in downtown Miami across the street from Bayfront Park. Capture Integration is located two floors up. The back was mounted on the Phase One 645 DF camera system, based on the Mamiya 645 DF. The model I handled also sported the V-Grip Air which, in addition to providing a nice vertical grip includes a remote trigger for Profoto Air lighting systems. The camera/lens + back + grip combination was surprisingly well balanced. The IQ180 sports an 80 megapixel sensor (as does the Leaf Aptus-II 12) which is astounding by itself, but the creamy goodness does not stop there. First and foremost is the amazing LCD display on the back of the unit: a wide format (3.2 inch), high resolution (1.15 Mpx), 16 million color touchscreen that rivals the Retina display found on Apple’s iPhone 4. The back [...]

Fans were lining up outside The Falls Apple Store in Miami, FL today since 6 AM in order to be the “first on the block” to own the latest version of Apple’s wildly successful iPad, the iPad 2. I passed by the store around 3:30 PM to see how the line was doing. What greeted me was similar to the huge lines I saw when Apple launched OS X Leopard, wrapping around the open-air mall for hundreds of feet. These gregarious fellows had been there since 6 AM in the morning! From right to left, Matt, Jonathan, Andre and Max, were all raring and eager for the store to open so they could have the honor of being first. Similar events were happening at pretty much every Apple Store in the universe. I got a report from Texas that Apple fans had camped out for days in front of a store. A friend of mine got there around the same time I did, and he was able to get his iPad2 (black, 64GB Verizon model) at around 6:45 PM. He called me a reported that over 100 people were still in line. The store ran out of 64GB AT&T models [...]

To get to the point ARCA-SWISS d4 & d4m With the invention of the d4 pan tilt head ARCA-SWISS has put an end to setting levers of 3d heads that extend in all directions and always get in the way. No more uneven swivelling out of the camera. No more oversized dimensions, heavy loads and other all too well-known drawbacks to get in your way. We get straight to the point! The d4 and d4m are especially suitable for efficient and precise work in digital studio photography and outdoors for architectural photography. The d4 is the world’s smallest, most functional and lightest gearhead. Technical specifications The innovative design of the ARCA-SWISS d4 and d4m gearheads unites the pivot points of the X and Y movements at the same point. The result of this new concept: identical and the smallest possible rotational radii. That ensures small camera movements and, as a consequence, almost no deviations in scale, which, until now, led to reduced depth of field in digital photography and all too often made tedious corrections necessary. The self-locking, micrometric movements in X and Y result from separate gear mechanisms, manufactured with a high-strength special alloy. Every tilt movement [...]

Phase One today announced their new IQ series of medium format digital backs. Sporting 40, 60.5 and a whopping 80 megapixels each, the three new backs also incorporate hi-res (1.15 megapixel) “Retina-like” touch displays, weather sealing, limited Live Mode viewing, Focus Mask (which highlights what parts of the image are in sharp focus – amazingly useful for tech camera users who would have to swap in a ground glass and loupe affair to achieve focus), 12.5 stops of dynamic range (DR), USB3 & FireWire 800 support, plus an improved buffer so that memory card write speeds are improved and continuous shooting can run until the card is full. All three backs feature Phase One Sensor+ technology allowing 4x the sensitivity while shooting at reduced image sizes. I, for one, am not surprised by this development. Leaf Imaging, former Phase One competitor and now wholly owned subsidiary of Phase One, has long used a touch screen interface on its digital backs. This is not a simple component update, but a total redesign of the digital back. The new IQ Series of digital backs sets the standard for high-end photography. The “limited Live View” is surprising on a CCD sensor. Live View [...]

Solms, Germany (December 22, 2010) – Leica Camera AG has released a new firmware update for the Leica S-System. All LEICA S2 and S2-P cameras will now be supplied with the latest firmware version. Users wishing to bring their camera up-to-date can now download the firmware update from the “Owners Area” on the Leica website and take advantage of the latest improvements. “Our close cooperation with photographers gives us not only an opportunity to constantly develop and improve the Leica S-System, but also allows us to address the precise needs of professional photographers. Therefore, the latest update, FW 1.0.0.24, includes quite a number of suggestions and wishes determined during discussions with professional users. The result is a wide range of improvements for applications, features and functions as well as the handling of the S2,” reports Stephan Schulz, product manager for the Leica S-System at Leica Camera AG. The FW 1.0.0.24 firmware update enables a multitude of enhanced camera functions. These include, for instance, lossless DNG compression. This offers particular benefits by reducing file sizes from around 75MB to around 40MB and increasing the burst-rate capability to 14 consecutive exposures (at 1.5 frames per second). Both of these factors depend on [...]

When one sets out to create a digital darkroom for themselves, either professionally or otherwise, great care and research almost always goes into selecting the best monitor, the best colorimeter, the best computer, the best mouse, heck, even the desk and chair gets some attention. Workflow articles always focus on the input from one’s camera into the computer and then out to the printer, but this misses the point. There is another vitally important part of the workflow whose input needs should the be considered: the photographer. Human Interface Devices (HID) is the fancy term for gizmos that allow you, the user, to interact directly with the computer. Since we all don’t have access to Johnny Mnemonic’s wetware interface, Tony Stark’s awesome 3D displays or Flynn’s molecular digitization system we have to do it the old-fashined way: with a keyboard and a pointing device. Enter the subjects of today’s literary offering: The Das Keyboard Professional S and the Wacom Intuos4 Pen Tablet. [DISCLAIMER: Both Das Keyboard and Wacom sent units for evaluation. I was not compensated in any way other than to be allowed to keep the review samples.] PART 1: DAS KEYBOARD PROFESSIONAL Your Daddy’s Keyboard (sort of) The Das [...]

Another PDN PhotoPlus show has come and gone and, once again, I slogged my way through the amassed crowd of photographers, photo buyers and journalists to bring you highlights from the show. This year’s report will be separated into two sections: Cameras & Lenses/Accessories. But first, as always, an Animoto video of the show highlights. Cameras PENTAX – First on my list of booths to visit was Pentax. There I met Ned Bunnell, President of Pentax Imaging USA, and we discussed at length (such as can be had at a trade show) the new to USA/Europe Pentax 645D medium format digital camera. The 645D is modeled very closely on the venerable Pentax 645N film camera and is compatible with all of the 645N’s lenses. This was a very smart move on Pentax’s part. As a whole new line of digital lenses are being developed for the 645D (only the 55 mm f/2.8 prime is available at launch) photographers can tap into a vast array of compatible lenses right away, many of which are available at reasonable prices (for now) on the used market. When the 645D launched in Japan, it was a runaway success. I think this took Pentax [...]
