Photorumors has gotten ahold of the specs for the upcoming Sony α77 cropped sensor pro camera. The camera is expected to be announced on August 24, 2011. While the specs hold great promise, many pros I have corresponded with are on the fence about this camera due to Sony’s use of an Electronic View Finder (EVF) instead of a traditional optical one. Though not listed below, the OLED EVF is supposed to sport around 3 million pixels which would make it the highest resolution EVF on the market to date. Full specs and analysis after the jump.
CENTER VALLEY, Pa., September 20, 2010 – Since 1936, photographers have appreciated Olympus’s critically acclaimed Zuiko® lenses for their innovative design, high quality and superior reliability. Today, Olympus is pleased to announce that it is developing a new flagship compact camera that will be its first digital compact camera with a built-in Zuiko® lens. Olympus expects to introduce the camera in the first quarter of 2011. Like the Olympus PEN® E-P2 and E-PL1 cameras, the new camera will include an accessory port so photographers will be able to expand its versatility by attaching optional accessories like the SEMA-1 external microphone adapter set. A prototype of the camera will be displayed this week at Photokina 2010, the world’s largest trade fair for the photographic and imaging industries held September 21-26 in Cologne, Germany. It will also be on display from October 28-30 at the 2010 PDN PhotoPlus Expo in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 07.09.2010. - Carl Zeiss now offers photographers special accessories to support their work with ZEISS lenses. The new UV and POL filters from Carl Zeiss are optically and mechanically tailored to the high-quality ZEISS SLR lenses and protected against light reflections with the ZEISS T* multi-coating. Because good optics can be somewhat heavy at times, Carl Zeiss now offers a special camera strap with air cell padding for SLR cameras. “It is important for us to not only deliver ideal image results, but to also make photography something to remember. This does not stop at lenses. We have also taken the demands and needs of photographers into consideration during development of our accessory products. They are the ideal addition to our ZEISS SLR lenses,” explains Martin Klottig, Marketing Manager of the Camera Lens Division at Carl Zeiss AG. The new UV and POL filters meet the highest demands on mechanical quality and can be quickly and easily changed. High-quality optical glass is tailored to the performance of ZEISS lenses, while the T* multi-coating minimizes light reflections on the glass-air surfaces and improves transmission. In addition to the filter function, the front lens element of the lens provides protection against [...]

LeicaRumors has received a tip that Leica is planning to introduce an EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) camera at Photokina 2010. “We will see a full frame Leica EVIL on Photokina 2010. It will look like the Leicaflex 18X24 prototype. Of course without mirror or the film lever and so on. It will be a VERY small system camera, but there will be a big battery grip you can use, if you want. The AF is very special, moving chip, the phase AF is ON the main sensor. Only in black, 21 mp, 2fps, native ISO from 50 to 6400. Full magnesium. Price: body only 3200 EUR. Will start with 3(!) pancakes, 2 primes, 2 zooms.” Image Source [Speculcations] This bodes for a very radical change in lens design. Moving the AF into the body is not new (Contax did that with their N-system), but Leica’s strength has always been lens design. Dedicated lenses for this platform would be much simpler in design and construction as they will lack a focusing mechanism. Manual focus will have to be controlled from the body since having a lens barrel focusing mechanism would throw off the AF. The rumored quantity of lenses will make a very strong showing for the [...]

Last year, on September 9, 2009 (09/09/09), Leica Camera surprised everyone by unveiling their second generation digital M rangefinder camera, the Leica M9. The photographic world was pleasantly surprised that Leica, who had vehemently denied the development of a new digital rangefinder, managed to pull this rabbit out of the hat. Background Leica’s first attempt at a digital M rangefinder, the Leica M8, met with some success but was not without it’s issues. The sensor’s lack of an AA filter, while increasing overall image sharpness, required the use of IR cut filters mounted on the lenses. To not do so often meant that images of black synthetics would take on a magenta cast that could not be corrected in post-production. The Leica faithful raised such a ruckus that Leica obliged them and shipped two IR cut filters for free to anyone who purchased a Leica M8. Still, the filter requirement raised the hackles of many a photographer. Next was the crop factor of 1.33x that Leica engineers said was necessary in order to maintain compatibility with the majority of M lenses made since 1954. Many wide-angle shooters were displeased by this. Others were put off by the initial 2GB storage [...]

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., February 3, 2010 – The new Olympus PEN® E-PL1 is truly greater than the sum of its parts, with a surprisingly small camera body packed with technology normally found in bigger, bulkier and heavier professional Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras and High-Definition (HD) camcorders. This third-generation PEN is built for shutterbugs who always wanted better pictures and considered a DSLR, but were intimidated by the bulky size and complex interface. The new camera’s simple design and easy interface enable consumers to easily create amazing images never dreamt possible. It will make you wonder how Olympus managed to put all of these powerful features inside such a compact camera for only $599.99. The E-PL1 equals an affordable and powerfully simple all-in-one package that travels with you to capture life in the high quality that your memories deserve. “Many of today’s consumers want a camera with the professional still image quality of a DSLR and HD video in a compact body that’s as easy to use as a point-and-shoot,” said John Knaur, senior marketing manager, Digital SLR, Olympus Imaging America Inc. “Thanks in part to an image sensor that’s approximately eight times larger in size than what’s inside [...]
