Today, I had the good fortune to attend the Hasselblad H4D launch event held at Studio 27 in Miami, FL. There was a very good turnout, including reps from Hasselblad, our local Hasselblad dealer (Peter Lorber of peterlorber.com) and one of the 2010 Hasselblad Masters, Claudio Napolitano (a resident of Miami as well). The real star of the show was the new Hasselblad H4D-40, the new low-end system from the Swedish camera maker. The only reason I call it “low-end” is because it is the smallest (pixel count-wise) lowest-priced (kit price $19,995 USD MSRP) member of the H-System of cameras. Beyond that, it meets or exceeds all of the other members in that system. The H4D camera body was announced last year, and the H4D-40 sports a new digital back which boasts the following specifications: 40 megapixel image capture 33.1×44.2mm (1.3x crop) sensor size ISO 1600 performance (without pixel-binning) Exposure times from 1/800s – 4 minutes New to the H4D body is True Focus and Absolute Position Lock. From the H4D press release: “True Focus helps solve one of the most lingering challenges that faces serious photographers today,” he continues, “true, accurate focusing throughout the image field. Without multi-point auto-focus [...]

Hasselblad brings Medium Format DSLR advantages to new generation of photographers with new H4D-40 camera. The announcement of Hasselblad’s H4D line of cameras and True Focus technology heralded the beginning of a new chapter in the history of medium format DSLRs. Now, with the launch of the H4D-40, Hasselblad is announcing its intent to bring the advantages of Medium Format DSLRs to high-end 35mm photographers. Hasselblad, world leading manufacturer of high-end digital camera systems, announced today the launch of a new product, the Hasselblad H4D-40, the most recent addition to the company’s new H4D camera line. The H4D line, built upon Hasselblad’s successful H3D-II series, adds faster capture rates, higher ISO ratings, up to 4 min exposure times, and the new True Focus feature, a further refinement of Hasselblad’s segment leading Auto Focus system that makes accurate near field composing substantially easier for photographic professionals. Hasselblad is targeting the H4D-40, which features a 33×44 mm CCD sensor with 40 million pixels and provides almost twice the capture area of the largest 35mm DSLR sensors, towards high-end 35mm professionals. “Most high-end photographers understand the advantages that a Medium Format system has over smaller formats,” explains Hasselblad CEO Larry Hansen, “but many [...]

Hasselblad confuses me. I signed an NDA (which I am honoring, BTW) that restricts me from discussing their new camera product, the H4D-40. I can say the name because I have two general emails from them stating it, their website states it, and Photo Pro Magazine in the UK has a print ad with the camera name and the launch date. OK, I’m all for product secrecy before launch and everything, but why go through the motions if the company themselves (and their PR firm) blow the NDA? What exactly have you legally bound me to do? Not talk about the product? – You are doing that. Not discuss technical details? – You haven’t sent me any. I can deduce them from other press releases and guess the missing bits. Not show any sample images? – You haven’t sent me a sample camera to shoot with. I can assume that you tapped some of the Hasselblad Masters to showcase the product and they will undoubtedly produce some truly stunning images with it, but if you are going through the motions and expense of an NDA, send those of us who agreed to your terms a camera to test on our [...]
