With 35 mm digital sensors (full frame and cropped) now encroaching into image sizes once reserved for medium format digital (MFD) systems, photographers are going to have to change the way they examine their images for picture quality. With the introduction of the Sony SLT-A77 and NEX-7, cropped (APS-C) sensors have now surpassed the 22 megapixel mark, entering into the medium format image zone. Hasselblad is supporting this exciting news with a campaign that sends photographers an extraordinary message: “You’ve got a brand new camera (You just don’t know it yet)”. A bi-directional spirit level that puts an end to skewed horizons. Quick access to a new rear info screen to display top panel information on the rear display.
11/07/2011 Hasselblad announces a firmware update that fine-tunes the H4D-60 to a whole new level with additional features and functionality. With a major firmware update announced today, the Hasselblad H4D-60 is well on its way to becoming a legend. One-click focus check, bi-directional electronic spirit level, the ability to display camera grip information on the rear monitor, an improved high resolution LCD, Live Video for more efficient workflow and Schneider and Rollei support bring the H4D-60 to a whole new level of usability for the working photographer. Here’s a closer look at a few of the new features. One-click focus check: With a single click, users can zoom in to 100% to check focus position and accuracy, a feature that’s particularly helpful when shooting untethered. With the H4D-60′s updated ability to utilize every pixel of resolution in its 3-inch monitor, one-click focus check’s accuracy is further enhanced. Spirit Level: The new bi-directional (pitch and roll) digital spirit level puts an end to skewed horizons and off-angle straight edges. A single button press of the “i” button – or a customized user button – calls up the level on the viewfinder and the LCD for quick access to precise visual references. Looks like some adapter goodness for the S2 is just around the corner. This is huge as this allows the S2 to tap into the mass of Hassy V lenses floating out in the wild.
Today, I had the good fortune to attend the Hasselblad H4D launch event held at Studio 27 in Miami, FL. There was a very good turnout, including reps from Hasselblad, our local Hasselblad dealer (Peter Lorber of peterlorber.com) and one of the 2010 Hasselblad Masters, Claudio Napolitano (a resident of Miami as well). The real star of the show was the new Hasselblad H4D-40, the new low-end system from the Swedish camera maker. The only reason I call it “low-end” is because it is the smallest (pixel count-wise) lowest-priced (kit price $19,995 USD MSRP) member of the H-System of cameras. Beyond that, it meets or exceeds all of the other members in that system. The H4D camera body was announced last year, and the H4D-40 sports a new digital back which boasts the following specifications: 40 megapixel image capture 33.1×44.2mm (1.3x crop) sensor size ISO 1600 performance (without pixel-binning) Exposure times from 1/800s – 4 minutes New to the H4D body is True Focus and Absolute Position Lock. From the H4D press release: “True Focus helps solve one of the most lingering challenges that faces serious photographers today,” he continues, “true, accurate focusing throughout the image field. Without multi-point auto-focus [...]

Hasselblad brings Medium Format DSLR advantages to new generation of photographers with new H4D-40 camera. The announcement of Hasselblad’s H4D line of cameras and True Focus technology heralded the beginning of a new chapter in the history of medium format DSLRs. Now, with the launch of the H4D-40, Hasselblad is announcing its intent to bring the advantages of Medium Format DSLRs to high-end 35mm photographers. Hasselblad, world leading manufacturer of high-end digital camera systems, announced today the launch of a new product, the Hasselblad H4D-40, the most recent addition to the company’s new H4D camera line. The H4D line, built upon Hasselblad’s successful H3D-II series, adds faster capture rates, higher ISO ratings, up to 4 min exposure times, and the new True Focus feature, a further refinement of Hasselblad’s segment leading Auto Focus system that makes accurate near field composing substantially easier for photographic professionals. Hasselblad is targeting the H4D-40, which features a 33×44 mm CCD sensor with 40 million pixels and provides almost twice the capture area of the largest 35mm DSLR sensors, towards high-end 35mm professionals. “Most high-end photographers understand the advantages that a Medium Format system has over smaller formats,” explains Hasselblad CEO Larry Hansen, “but many [...]

Hasselblad confuses me. I signed an NDA (which I am honoring, BTW) that restricts me from discussing their new camera product, the H4D-40. I can say the name because I have two general emails from them stating it, their website states it, and Photo Pro Magazine in the UK has a print ad with the camera name and the launch date. OK, I’m all for product secrecy before launch and everything, but why go through the motions if the company themselves (and their PR firm) blow the NDA? What exactly have you legally bound me to do? Not talk about the product? – You are doing that. Not discuss technical details? – You haven’t sent me any. I can deduce them from other press releases and guess the missing bits. Not show any sample images? – You haven’t sent me a sample camera to shoot with. I can assume that you tapped some of the Hasselblad Masters to showcase the product and they will undoubtedly produce some truly stunning images with it, but if you are going through the motions and expense of an NDA, send those of us who agreed to your terms a camera to test on our [...]

January 19, 2010 – For the ninth consecutive year, ten photographers have been awarded the coveted title of Hasselblad Master. Hasselblad today announced the ten winners of its prestigious 2009 Masters Awards, one for each of ten categories: architecture, editorial, fashion/beauty, fine art, general photography, nature/landscape, portrait, wedding/social and up-and-coming artist. Given in recognition of his or her contribution to the art of photography, Masters Awards are judged on photographic ability in the areas of creativity, composition, conceptual strength and technical skill. With submissions from nearly 3,000 photographers, almost double the number from 2008, this year’s contest has been one of the most successful since its inception in 2001. Because of the high level of participation, the size of the judging panel was increased twofold. An internal jury performed the first round of eliminations and an elite panel of industry professionals, including leading art directors, editors and photographers such as Steve McCurry (USA), Anton Corbijn (Netherlands) and Tim Flach (UK) made the winning selections from a group of 100 finalists. For the first time, a public poll counted as one vote for each category. This year’s Masters Awards was also one of the most competitive in the program’s history. Christian [...]

11/30/2009 The photographer, Günther Raupp, uses the Hasselblad H3DII-50 to shoot the strictly limited Ferrari Calendar From the beginning, the legendary founder of the company, Enzo Ferrari, was burning with pure passion and motivation. That is why there could only be one engine for the first car that bore his name: a V12. It had just one sole purpose – to win races! It is here, in sporting competition, that the Ferrari legend has its roots. Magnificent technology, countless triumphs on all the world’s race tracks and the grandeur of Ferrari sports cars have held enthusiasts spellbound ever since. Are there perhaps any parallels between the Italian sports car manufacturer’s large-format annual calendars and the title “Mito Ferrari”? “I regard my work as a sporting challenge. Consequently, I approach this project as I would a race that I can win by using the media of photography and graphics,” confesses the Stuttgart-based automobile photographer, Günther Raupp (BFF), quite openly. And he certainly knows what he’s talking about: 2010 marks the 26th year in succession that he has been responsible for the photography and graphic design of Ferrari calendars. Over the years Pirelli and Ferrari can claim to have produced the only [...]
