In a previous post, I posited that the recently announced Sony NEX-7 stands to threaten the Leica M9 as the street shooter camera of choice. The Leica M series of rangefinders (analog and digital) were instrumental in the creation of the genre. The Leica M lenses are world renowned for their quality and ability to capture light. Can Sony’s pro level, mirror-less, APS-C camera dethrone the street shooter champ who started it all over 50 years ago? Since there are no NEX-7′s in the wild yet (I am not cool enough to score a pre-release unit, yet), we are going to take a look at the specifications of both systems. Afterwards, I will present my analysis and findings. I realize that this is all just a mental exercise, and that until you can shoot both cameras in similar conditions, you cannot actually make any kind of claim. The proof is in the pudding, as they say. Specification Comparison For the purposes of this comparison, I have decided to set up both cameras in a comparable street shooter configuration: Basic Camera + fast 35 mm lens (or equivalent). Specifications courtesy of dpreview.com. Body type Body type Rangefinder-style mirrorless Rangefinder-style mirrorless Sensor [...]

Really Right Stuff, purveyors of fine camera accessories, have recently added a new product for the Leica M digital rangefinders. The BM9 is a version of their famous L-plates that allows cameras to be mounted on a tripod (using any Arca Swiss style clamp) in either the horizontal (landscape) or vertical (portrait) orientation without having to tilt the tripod head over 90o, forcing the photographer to have to completely recompose the shot and altering the center of gravity of the tripod. The BM9 is actually much more than an L-plate. It is a system that allows for custom combinations to suit the needs of any photographer. Consisting of a Base Plate, an L-bracket, and a Grip, the BM9-B stylishly adds multiple mounting options to Leica digital M cameras while shoring up handhold-ability for folks with large mitts (like yours truly). [DISCLAIMER] The BM9-B Set was provided to me by Really Right Stuff for me to review. [/DISCLAIMER] Appearance The BM9-B is only available in an anodized black finish. This might irk owners of chrome Leica M8′s or steel paint M9′s, but to be honest, the finish is so rugged and durable, it’s worth the minor color mismatch. Heck, just [...]

Cosina today announced a new lens in their family of M-mount lenses: the Voigtlander Heliar Classic 75mm f/1.8. An update to their excellent Color Heliar 75mm f/2.5, this version of the lens adds an M-mount (the original was Leica Thread Mount and had to use an adaptor on M-mount cameras) and is just about 1-stop faster than the original. The lens is expected to ship in September and will have an MSRP of $875 USD. The US distributor for Cosina Voigtlander, Cameraquest, has not made any announcements yet, but historically they will be accepting pre-orders with a small deposit. I am curious to see how well the new lens performs. The Color Heliar’s claim to fame has always been it’s bokeh. CV has made some pretty strong claims to that heritage [...]

Last year, on September 9, 2009 (09/09/09), Leica Camera surprised everyone by unveiling their second generation digital M rangefinder camera, the Leica M9. The photographic world was pleasantly surprised that Leica, who had vehemently denied the development of a new digital rangefinder, managed to pull this rabbit out of the hat. Background Leica’s first attempt at a digital M rangefinder, the Leica M8, met with some success but was not without it’s issues. The sensor’s lack of an AA filter, while increasing overall image sharpness, required the use of IR cut filters mounted on the lenses. To not do so often meant that images of black synthetics would take on a magenta cast that could not be corrected in post-production. The Leica faithful raised such a ruckus that Leica obliged them and shipped two IR cut filters for free to anyone who purchased a Leica M8. Still, the filter requirement raised the hackles of many a photographer. Next was the crop factor of 1.33x that Leica engineers said was necessary in order to maintain compatibility with the majority of M lenses made since 1954. Many wide-angle shooters were displeased by this. Others were put off by the initial 2GB storage [...]

Leica, as part of the 09-09-09 Festivities surrounding the Launch of the Leica M9, threw a little soiree at Dale Photo & Digital in Hollywood, FL. Roland Wolff, Director of New Market Development for Leica Camera USA, was on hand and he brought along a Leica M9 to play with. I got there early and got some extra hands-on time with the new camera. I was so excited about this that I stupidly left my SDHC card at home so I don’t have any good sample files to share. Fear not, for I shall acquire them. I have little slideshow after the jump. Physically, the M9 handles very similarly to the M8/M8.2. The only real difference is in the top plate which no longer sports an LCD display with frame counts and battery life. The body dimensions are pretty much identical, so your M8 leather cases will fit the M9 just fine. Luigi from Leicatime has already tested his line of leather cases. Tim Isaacs’ Thumbs Up Model 1 CESP also fits perfectly on the M9. We did some quick-and-dirty field tests there in the store and found that DR performance was about 1 stop better on the M9, with [...]

With today’s webcast, the NDA on the new Leica M9 and X1 cameras has been lifted. Leica had tweeted that not everything had been leaked to the web, but I saw no new surprises in the webcast (other than Seal strutting around with his new M9 and the fact that they gave him an S2! Lucky bastard.) The Leica M9 will be available in the next few days for a retail price of $6,995 USD (which, while still high, is lower that what most pundits expected.) The leaked Leica M brochure can be downloaded from here. The Leica X1 will begin shipping in December 2009 and retail for $1.995 USD. I will post a gallery of photos from today’s Leica event at Dale Photo & Digital later this evening.

Leica last week sent out invitations to everyone to see their live webcast on 09/09/09 at 9:09 AM EDT to hear about their new line of products. Astute observers noticed discrepancies in the M camera portrayed in the video from the standard M8/M8.2. Add to that more rumors hitting the web, the plethora of nines in the date and the time, and a lot of other subtle indicators and a consensus was reached that an M9 was in the offing. Spy photos were posted and taken down. Links were posted then removed. Well, the Leica M Brochure has been leaked to the web and there’s an M9 on the front page. Wednesday is going to be very very interesting.

Leicarumors and other sites are reporting that Leica is planning to announce a new digital M camera on 09-09-09 at 9:09 AM. The timing is serendipitous, that’s for sure. Many Leica owners are unloading their M8′s and M8.2′s in anticipation of the new M which is rumored to be full-frame. Here are some mock-ups that have made their way around the rumor circuit:
