OBERKOCHEN, Germany — March 30th, 2011 – During the NAB Trade Show in Las Vegas from April 9-14, 2011, Carl Zeiss will present two new mounts for the Compact Prime CP.2 lenses: the E mount and the MFT mount. The MFT mount is particularly suitable for the new corresponding professional camcorders, while the brand-new E mount is perfect for the new Sony cameras like the Super 35 mm NXCAM camcorder. The MFT mount has been available since March. The new E mount is expected to be available beginning in June. Exactly a year ago, Carl Zeiss introduced the Compact Prime CP.2 series during the NAB Show in Las Vegas. They are the first lenses with interchangeable mount developed specially for filming with HDSLR cameras. Since then, there has been significant demand for these lenses among cinematographers and still photographers adding new video services. Carl Zeiss is now adding a new chapter to its Compact Prime CP.2 success story.

Red started shipping its EPIC-M cameras a little under 2 weeks ago and the first camera ever shipped (#00006) was stolen from the owners chalet in France. Red founder, Jim Jannard, has offered a rewared of $100,000 USD for the safe return of the camera and the owners intellectual property it contained.

Now that’s what I call customer support!

Here is a picture of the actual camera that was stolen:

Stolen Red EPIC-M

Here is the statement from Jim Jannard posted on REDUSER.NET:

The unthinkable has just happened. Mark’s chalet was broken into while they were sleeping and EPIC 0006 was stolen along with cash. Mark is at the Police Station right now in Meribel, France.

The family is safe and no one was hurt.

This is a tight community. We need your help. Keep your eyes and ears open for any news, tips or details about an EPIC floating around. An EPIC is a hard thing to circulate since there is only one in the world.

Please contact anyone at RED if you hear of anything.

Of course Mark is heartbroken. So are we.

Jim

While it is not usually our position to offer rewards for our customers stolen property, this one is an exception. EPIC #00006 is truly a historic camera. It is the very 1st EPIC shipped to one of our customers and the way it was taken irritates me no end.

We are now offering $100,000 for the safe return of EPIC #00006 and the rest of the system including the media with Mark’s files… and the arrest and conviction of those that broke into Mark’s chalet in France. We will ONLY pay this amount if there is an arrest and conviction of the parties as we are not interested to be ransomed by thieves.

If you have any information regarding the theft, the location of Mark’s property or any details that might solve this case, please contact anyone at RED and they will make sure I hear about it.Posting information on REDUSER is NOT a good idea for several reasons, including your own safety. Please do NOT post any information you have obtained. Any post we see on REDUSER regarding information on this case will be deleted.

Jim

site-logo.pngThe microEVF is the first electronic viewfinder designed from the ground up specifically for HDSLR cameras. The microEVF is not just a bulky repurposed LCD monitor: It is designed specifically for the needs of HDSLR emphasizing compact lightweight design, superior power consumption, and incredible affordability.

The popularity of HDSLRs such as the Canon 5D MKII for video and motion photography has skyrocketed in recent years, but the camera body is not ideal for video. The first generation of solutions for monitoring currently available attaching an optical viewfinder to the back of the camera’s LCD screen severely limit placement of the viewfinder and camera body and eliminate possibility of using additional monitors for camera assistants or directors. The new Redrock microEVF is an external electronic viewfinder that connects to the camera body and can be placed anywhere for maximum comfort and stability, and can be part of a multi-monitoring solution. The microEVF uses a custom made state-of-the-art backlit LED fitted in an attractive, ergonomic housing.

The CP.2 100 mm/T2.1 CF is based on the Planar design and is the longest focal length in the Compact Prime CP.2 lens series so far. It extends the series by adding a very fast telephoto lens with a close-up focusing range of 0.7 meters. The CP.2 50mm/T2.1 Makro is based on the Makro-Planar design and allows close-up shots to be taken with the object at a distance of just 24 centimeters. This responds to the wishes of many filmmakers. All Compact Prime CP.2 lenses come with interchangeable mounts, guaranteeing maximum flexibility now and in the future, in every situation, and for various camera platforms.

RED Scarlet and Bomb EVF surprise hands-on! — Engadget

The boys at Engadget got to fondle the upcoming RED Scarlet DSMC (Digital Stills and Motion Camera) thanks to “Ted from RED”. The unit in the video is a non-working prototype, but it does give you an idea of the form-factors being designed here.

Later in the video Ted mentions pricing (actually reasonable) and expected delivery dates (late Spring/early Summer for Scarlet) but stated that they are “very fluid”.

Video after the jump. Continue reading »
