Lolumina Soft Release

accessory May 7, 2014

Just ordered one of these in black for my Fuji X-T1: Lolumina Soft Release

Features mushroom
No, it’s not some sort of UFO, it’s a soft release button for cameras without threaded shutter releases!

Now you too can add some rangefinder style bling to your modern camera! Here’s how it works:
Features mount
First, you select a mounting base that matches the curvature of your camera’s shutter release. Lolumina includes a variety of bases so you can match your camera exactly.
Features button curvature
Then, you adhere the base to your camera’s shutter release using the 3M VHB adhesive provided. Once that is done (and cured) you screw in the button using the included rubber O-ring as a cushion/lock washer.

And if you did this right, your camera will look like this:

The best part: This little gem only costs $12.99 + $1.99 shipping! I will let you know how well it works on my Fuji X-T1 when the release arrives.
The Lolumina arrived today and I was able to install it on my Fuji X-T1 without any issues. A couple of things to note are:
The base adheres to the shutter release using 3M VHB (Very High Bond – stuff that can glue a fault line). You only get one shot at installing it because you cannot reposition it once it’s glued down. Also don’t touch it with your finger or you will have a threaded stud permanently adhered to your fingertip. I used a pair of needle nosed pliers to hold the base and place it precisely in the middle of my shutter release. VHB takes 72 hours (3 days) to fully cure, but it is at 90% strength in 24 hours. I used jeweler’s flat screwdriver to peel off the cover on the adhesive.
The kit comes with two bases: one for flatter shutter releases and one for curved shutter releases. The Fuji X-T1 uses the flatter one. Spare o-rings are included as well. The curved one is marked with a black dot on the adhesive cover.
The button itself is a bit large but does not interfere with any of the dials or switches on the camera. Lolumina assures me that different button styles, colors and sizes are on their way.
Here is a photo of my X-T1 decked out with the Lolumina:
